Why Bother To Have an EMR Survey?

Electrosmog: Uncontrolled man-made electromagnetic radiation (EMR); a new form of environmental pollution.

Digitally pulsed microwave radio signals used by mobile and cordless phones are now the most ubiquitous pollutant on the planet. Each individual source of electrosmog has to be below official thermal levels but collectively and over time these non-thermal emissions add to our total lifetime toxic exposure.

Environmental pollution from all sources - chemical, biological, radioactive and electromagnetic can act synergistically, increasing the adverse effects of some exposures whilst reducing the beneficial effects of others.

We are all subject to varying levels of electrosmog as we go about our normal daily lives. Some devices produce electromagnetic pollution as a by-product. For example vacuum cleaners and washing machines produce significant oscillating magnetic fields, especially when starting up. Others, such as cordless and mobile phones use electromagnetic emissions (wireless / radio / microwaves) as a fundamental property of the way they work.

Exposure levels that are safe for everyone remain the subject of considerable disagreement and on-going debate. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a division of The World Health Organisation, has recently classified 'Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields associated with wireless phone use' as a Class 2B Carcinogen, the same as amongst others, Aflatoxin, Lead and DDT.

Why should you be concerned?

Electrosmog affects individuals differently but what is clear is that there have now been thousands of detailed investigations showing that people and animals are adversely effected by electrosmog. An ever increasing number of real-life testimonies clearly shows current levels of electromagnetic exposure hold very significant and real dangers, at least for some, if not all.

Science and legislation often take a while to catch up. In the meantime some people are struggling with serious side-effects of electromagnetic pollution that to others does not even seem to exist.

Why now especially?

Man-made radiation has been around for only about a hundred years. Ever growing use of electricity and the proliferation of wireless technologies in the last decade have added a whole new dimension to people's electromagnetic radiation exposure.

This new form of widespread pollution is a political hot-potato and commercially there are billions at stake. Nevertheless, and despite intense industry lobbying, there remains much scientific and medical concern.

In May 2011 The European Parliament (The Council of Europe) passed Resolution 1815 calling on the governments of all member states to '...take all reasonable measures to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields, especially to radio frequencies from mobile phones, and particularly the exposure to children and young people who seem to be most at risk from head tumours'

House purchasers would like to think their homes and investments are ‘as safe as houses’ - forever. Changes in the modern environment over which people may have little or no control can change the 'electromagnetic landscape' overnight. A mobile phone mast nearby can knock 25% off the value of a house or make it un-saleable. A string of pylons and high-voltage cables overhead, or perhaps underground, the same. More immediately, a DECT cordless phone base station where people sleep (or in an adjoining property perhaps) may so disrupt sleep as to have serious consequences for those affected. There is currently no effective legal or constitutional recourse available to people whose lives become devastated by low-level electromagnetic exposure.
